Chapter 16 – Wheels and Deals
Shortly before the morning watch, Will woke, got dressed and went out to
the helm. He looked across the foredeck and spied Jack's crutches next to
a hammock strung between two belaying pins on the rail. Jack was in the hammock,
lying on his side.
As soon as the sun was up, Jack woke, grabbed his crutches and went to the
helm. "What time is it, whelp?"
"How did you know it was me?"
"Your smell. I know it better den my own. What time is it?"
Will looked at the sun. "Five bells."
"Tought so. I'll take da helm."
"But Jack, you haven't had the helm since before the operation. Besides
which, you can't see."
"As if dat had anyting to do wid it. We're heading six points off east; from
where we started, dat's straight toward Port Royal. Feels like a good wind;
I estimate five days if it keeps up." He sniffed the air. "No storm in da
air, so it's clear sailing for at least today. And if a ship is sighted,
I'll call for you. Now go have breakfast, whelp."
/Well I'VE been told off. I guess he IS handling it well./ "Jack, why did
you sleep on deck last night? I missed you."
"Because I don't want Jacob on my ship!"
Jack let out a deep sigh. "I'm a pirate. Jacob is dree quarters Cherokee.
I expected him to grow up as a Cherokee brave and be respected...his mudder's
blood could have made him chief. Instead he wanted to be a pirate and probably
get hanged. I don't need or want him looking up to me. I left his mudder
wid a good, well-respected brave. I never figured dat she would tell him
who I was. He doesn't belong here."
"Have you ever told him that?"
"Of course I have. He won't listen."
"Jack, he is an adult, and can make his own decisions."
"I know. But he's da best of da litter. I have ten sons in various ports.
I can honestly say dat his mum was da only one I didn't honestly deserve.
She was a Cherokee princess. He's too good for dis life, so after we drop
off Norrington, we're going to Nort Carolina and Drop Jacob wid his mum."
Neither man had notice Jacob creeping silently up the stairs, listening.
There were tears in his eyes. "Father, I do understand your reasoning. But
Lynx Kitten Dreaming has been gone for seven years now. I have nowhere else
to go; Five Bears threw me out shortly afterward. I'm afraid I take after
you in stubbornness, father, and he didn't want to put up with my antics.
I'd like to stay with you and get to know you beyond what I've read."
Jack's head and shoulders drooped noticeably. "I don't want you to get killed."
"Isn't that my choice now? Father it is a good day to die. I have no fear
of death, and I can handle pistol and sword as well as I handle the bow.
Please, father. I'll swab decks, cook, or man the bilge pump...whatever jobs
need to be done."
Jack crutched over to Jacob and put a hand on his shoulder. "Jacob, you are
far better den any of dis. But you have your mind made up. When I catch up
to Five Bears, I'll teach him dat I won't stand for anyone abandoning my
son. Don't worry about swabbing decks, dough. Wid what you know of steering,
you're da new second mate. But for now, could you take da helm for just a
little while? William and I have some business to attend to." Jacob took
the helm as a confused Will followed Jack down the stairs to Dr. Abernathy's
cabin and knocked.
The door was opened by Norrington. "Captain Sparrow. So nice to see you up
"May we come in and discuss someting wid you?"
"Yes, certainly." Jamie stepped out of the way just in time for Jack to pass
by him, followed by Will.
Jack sat in one of the chairs and faced in the direction where he presumed
Jamie to be. "Commodore, daire is someting we need to discuss."
James sat in a chair in the direction to which Jack had spoken. "Indeed.
Would this, perhaps, have something to do with the deal between Captain Turner
"Yes, actually. But it's not what you tink. I would like to change da person
you hang. I know Will offered for you to hang `im after da cardinal was captured,
but I've been a pirate for most of my life. William here has only been one
for a few short years, and is entirely too honest for da profession. So take
"I think not, Sparrow. You see, I have no intention of hanging either of
you. You were right. There are definitely different classifications of `pirate'
that I had never really looked at before. And after this service to the king
that you and Captain Turner have performed, I believe I can arrange clemency
or both of you, and if you agree to leave British ships and ports alone after
this, I believe a Letter of Marque would be in order."
Jack looked indignant. "Me? Become a King's Man? Ridiculous! Now, clemency
I'll accept. And I can easily give my word that we only go after British
ships for supplies if we can't get dem any other way. But a Letter of Marque
is insulting to any truly free man. But tank you for da offer. I know you
meant well by it."
Will was grinning. "Commodore, if you could arrange it, we'd be happy to
accept, even after Jack's little speech. It WOULD make it easier to be ourselves.
I do have a question for you though. The Cardinal...what would YOU want done
"As he is part of the Church and according to their practices has done nothing
illegal, as an officer of the Royal Navy, officially I can do nothing. However.
As James Norrington the MAN, seeing only part of the viciousness of the man
and the lengths to which he is willing to go in his hatred, I would pray
that the man never leave this ship alive."
Will nodded. "Thank you, Commodore. For EVERYTHING. We should be o
Port Royal by Saturday, weather permitting. Oh. We do have some Naval uniforms
and other clothing in the hold. You are welcome to choose any of them for
Jack grabbed his crutches and stood up, holding out his hand.
James took it and shook the pirate's hand in earnest. "Captain Sparrow, it
has actually been a pleasure." He turned to Will and grinned. "Captain Turner,
likewise. But please, in the future, if you wish my help for something like
this...could you please use the front door and let me dress before kidnapping
me? My wife is going to have many words with me—and quite probably you—when
we get home." All three men laughed.
Jack left smiling, and took the helm from Jacob. Will went to the foredeck
and took down the hammock Jack had used and stowed it, returning to the foredeck
and watched Jack, smiling at the thought of a blind man at the helm. /But
he IS Captain Jack Sparrow. I guess he was right all along: He CAN do anything./

That evening, there was celebrating all over the ship; Captain Sparrow was
back to his old self (as much as could be expected and then some). Will threw
a party in the great cabin for the senior officers and Commodore Norrington.
Raggetti, knowing that Jack had his teeth wired shut, made a special plate
with the same delicious food he'd made for everyone else, but shredded into
tiny pieces and served with a spoon. Jack made a special point of thanking
As they were eating dessert and toasting Norrie for all his help, a cry of
"Sail Ho!" came from the crow's nest. Jack sent Jacob to check it out. When
he returned, he was a bit confused.
"I don't recognize the ship, but she's flying a flag of truce. I've got the
crew ready in case it's a ruse, but we'll not do anything unless they attack."
"Good. Will, take da helm and heave to. Gibbs, when dey get here, bring da
captain in here. Have Pintel bring a couple more settings. Commodore, you
are my guest, so if dey take exception to your being here, no harm shall
come to you. Anamaria? Jacob? Stay here wid me in case daire captain isn't
polite to our guest. And someone find my pistol and sword, eh?" Will and
Gibbs left. Jacob brought him the two weapons.
Dr. Abernathy looked at Jack, confused. "But Jack, you're BLIND."
"I know dat, luv, but dey don't, and I'm far from deaf. If I can hear dem,
I can hit dem."
